Electronics Design Experience UK

With over 100 years of collective electronics development experience, we bring together a wide range of electronics engineering skills from a variety of backgrounds, personal interests and marketplaces.  We have worked with UK and overseas clients, in both electronics design and manufacturing projects.

We have experience of developing products for clients across many different markets and as a result we have gained knowledge and insight of these markets and their requirements. We are therefore able to 'cross-pollinate' ideas from one market into another - on many occasions we have developed a solution for a client that made use of technology being applied in another market sector that the client had not previously been aware of. Generally, we create modules of technology which can be deployed easily in any new products. It is this experience and knowledge that keeps our clients coming back and attracts new clients to us.

Medical, Healthcare and MDT
We have been especially focusing our attention on - and had notable success in - the medical market in the past 6 years and have supported clients in obtaining FDA approval. This market sector also fits with MLE's desire to make a difference to the world through developing life-changing products.

Products in this marketplace include sluice or irrigation pumps, miniaturised cranial pressure monitors, large bone orthopaedic motor drives, intelligent wound monitors, bed monitors, enuresis sensors, body movement and breathing detection, epilepsy monitors and blood recovery/blood coagulation products like the PlasmaJet®. Plasma Surgical came to us for help in harnessing complex plasma technology for medical use, and the result was the PlasmaJet® - an innovative device that coagulates bleeding tissues using a jet of argon plasma, which is so effective it can reduce patient risk during surgery and shorten hospital stay.

Industrial and Instrumentation
We have developed a very large number of products for clients in industrial markets. Our expertise in developing industrial controls in particular has led many clients to us. Typical products include motor starters for generating sets, controllers for water purification using advanced DSP controls, advanced capacitance gauge measurement for extruded coaxial cable using precision 300MHz charge amplifiers, and Profi-bus interface.

HVAC markets - controllers for chilling, cooling, heating batteries, fan controls, room thermostats, BMS systems, motor speed controllers, fan controls, relay control banks, strain gauge monitoring and measurement for crane use.

There are also many examples of signal conversion and transfer function modifiers, where inputs are typically 0-10v, 4-20mA etc. We also have wide experience of field bus communications for Modbus, RS485 and such like.

Power Supply and Motor Drives
Power supplies are a mainstay of MLE designs. We have experience in various fields requiring specific understanding and technologiies. Medical applications require exceptional isolation and ultra low leakage currents. Motor drives for automotive aerospace and military applications operate under extreme temperature and vibration. We have designed hard drills, vehicle heating and cooling fans, water and fuel pumps using traditional insulated mounting techniques and custom ceramic substrates.
High value consumer products such as DVD players and set-top boxes require lower total cost, going beyond basic component cost to include design for manufacture, with automated assembly and test.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) tend to fail in service despite giving impressive results on the test bench. Our extensive experience enables us to design for real world conditions, going far beyond simple data sheet values. We can also relish the unusual, such as an impulse magnetiser delivering 2MW peak power for magnetising magnets for motors.

electronics design ukSecurity
As society becomes more concerned with security, the market for clever electronic devices is increasing, as is the work that we undertake for clients in this area. Examples include window entry detection - separate to window exit. Contactless door entry and exit monitors and car intruder alarms with wireless fobs.

didBOX is a driver identification and access control system aimed primarily at limiting unauthorised use of fleet vehicles. It offers its customers many benefits including enabling access to vehicles to be limited to approved drivers only, records and measures equipment usage by operator, date and time, integrates easily with simple spreadsheets and has low set-up and running costs.

Scientific
Developing hi-quality instrumentation for scientific use is an area that is growing; we have been involved in a number of projects in this area, however due to the often-sensitive nature of our client's work, we are unable to discuss many projects in detail.

Automotive
Projects for the automotive industry often present challenges, which we relish, as the product specifications are often tight and call for the most innovative of solutions.
For example, Ferrari involved MLE in development work on a new top secret project, which looked at measuring rotating angles at high speed using the difference between two resolver positions. So detailed were their specificiations, they had to commission a solution. We were tasked with developing a dual channel, high-precision and high-speed resolver interface, which was able to drive two resolvers with accuracies of 0.25 degrees at 20,000RPM.
In this sector, we have also developed door latch systems for wireless & RFID power assisted door latches.

Audio and Communications
Our team has extensive audio experience in both broadcasting technology and public address systems and we love putting these skills into practice.

The Unusual
Some of the most interesting projects we have worked on have also tended to be the most unusual; they're often the most fun too! Urban artists Greyworld and MLE took on the challenge of creating The Source, an innovative electronic installation commissioned by the London Stock Exchange in time for its unveiling by the Queen at the opening of the new Stock Exchange July 2004.

Regulatory
In just about all cases it is essential that the product we develop is marketable in the chosen country. To do this it is important to pass the appropriate regulatory standards. We have experience of most generic and many specialist regulatory standards for emission, susceptibility and safety.
